An autumn engagement session

Environmental portraiture is not just about portraits of people, but to give a sense of space and time.  It tells a story, and in this case, more than just two couple sharing their tender moments together.  The fiery leaves of autumn colors surrounding the subjects spark the passion otherwise hidden behind the couple's simple gestures.  Ok, that was my cheesy interpretation :).  Actually, it is the couple's favorite season, and the colors just help to accentuate the couple in this scenery.  The environment must contribute to the image, and at the same time, can not distract from the subject.  As I have mentioned in my previous posts, photography is all about exclusion of elements that are not relevant or crucial to an image.

On the technical note, this image was taken with the 85mm f/1.4, a fine lens indeed for portraiture.  Extremely sharp wide open and the beautiful rendering of the out of focus background are desirable traits of this lens.  The lighting was perfect as the sun was close to setting, with its evenly diffused soft light and no harsh shadows.  Otherwise known as the golden hour as many photography books call it - the golden glow of sky an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset.
